Top 3 ways to create sustainable developments

At J. & W. Lowry we are committed to creating sustainable developments, with a vision that is always carefully and thoughtfully executed.

As a family run business since 1848, we have a long history and highly value the experience and knowledge we have gained to lead us into the future.

Director Thomas Foster says "Our core business is to develop and deliver successful projects safely, to a high quality, meeting the needs of today without jeopardising the needs of the future"

So what are the top 3 ways of creating sustainable developments?

1. Using renewable energy sources

We work closely with designers, clients, local authorities and housing and care providers to discuss how renewable energy sources can be incorporated into our developments.

From solar and wind power, air and ground source heat pumps to biomass boilers and battery storage, we always strive to reduce carbon emissions - whether during construction or for the sustainable running of the building once completed.

2. Prioritise green spaces within building design

With a focus on specialist supported living and elderly residential developments J. & W. Lowry understands the importance of green spaces within building design for both mental and physical wellbeing.

Whether it’s private gardens or communal outdoor areas, we will endeavour to incorporate green spaces wherever possible.

Not only does the inclusion of green spaces help to reduce carbon dioxide levels, they can also help to build sustainability through a sense of community and improved wellbeing.

3. Using sustainable materials

Another extremely effective way to reduce the overall carbon footprint of any property development is through the use of sustainable materials.

Did you know that 50% of the carbon dioxide emissions in the construction industry are a direct result of cement production? Small switches such as low carbon cement can help to reduce these negative effects.

New buildings don’t have to have a detrimental impact on the environment and at J. & W. Lowry we want to strive for sustainability at every stage of the development process.

The Needs of the Future

There is a chronic need for new homes in the UK, and the need is even greater when it comes to specialist supported living and elderly residential developments.

We want to work together with everyone involved in the development process - from local authorities and care providers, to designers, clients and quantity surveyors - to discuss how we can incorporate sustainability into the work that we do.

It is clear that more developments and homes are needed so we want to help to ensure that the needs of today are met whilst being mindful of the future generations to come.
