Elderly care homes across the world

It’s incredibly humbling to take a look at the world’s finest elderly care homes. From stand out design and infrastructure to communities that have been created and grown through careful planning and thoughtful construction, we wanted to share some of the most innovative and inspiring care homes across the world.

1. Monte da Palhagueira, Portugal

Taking retirement living to new heights - literally. This development spans 22 acres and is located in the peaceful Gorjoes hills in Portugal. It is close to Faro yet secluded within its own stunningly landscaped grounds including an ornamental lake.

Facilities include a luxury restaurant, tennis court, 2 swimming pools and a church all on site. There are domestic services and cleaning staff as well as medical assistance available 24 hours, 7 days a week to offer reassurance to elderly residents especially those with complex needs.

2. Amonsagana, Philippines

Located close to Cebu, a popular beach resort with both local and international tourists, this retirement village has an incredible offering for elderly residents.

Each accommodation option comes with an organic vegetable garden to encourage residents to be outside, to get active and to eat healthily. There is a tree reserve and endless walking trails which residents can enjoy when exploring the 79 acre setting.

Design is traditional yet luxurious; with dark woods, white soft furnishings and lots of natural light.

3. Battersea Place, London

The Telegraph newspaper described Battersea Place as “one of the world’s top 3 luxurious retirement communities” and it’s true that it seems closer to a 5 star hotel than traditional visions of an elderly care home.

Maintenance, gardening and cleaning are incorporated into the service charge for the apartments and there are nursing staff on site 24/7 to provide whatever care is required. The development has a heated swimming pool and state of the art fitness suite, and there’s also an on-call concierge and personal chauffeur service.

4. Hope Island, Australia

The Gold Coast is a popular place for retirement and the area has many impressive elderly care homes to choose from.

Hope Island consists of suites presented in Art Deco style with all the modern features you’d expect such as air conditioning and wi-fi. Each suite has direct access to either a balcony or a courtyard to ensure residents can enjoy time in the sunshine as and when they like.

As well as a restaurant and cafe, there’s also a piano bar and a cinema providing excellent social hubs for elderly residents to meet and relax.

5. Flete House, Devon

Imagine spending your later years in a Grade I listed country house in the beautiful Devon countryside. There are views across the Erme Estuary and Dartmoor National Park to gaze out over from any of the high end apartments on offer here.

Residents can enjoy the panelled dining room where a daily lunch service is offered, as well as a drawing room and library where they can relax and socialise. The billiard room is a real feature here and outdoors there is a croquet lawn and tennis court.
